A huge thank you to everyone who came to’ Art in the Garden’ this weekend. As always it was an amazing, vibrant community event and so much fun to talk and laugh with so many wonderful people.

This email is also a reminder that I am one of the eighteen featured artists at the ‘Mid Main Art Fair’ on Sunday June 11th at the Heritage Hall on Main Street in Vancouver. This is a one day event from 11am – 6pm

It would be great if you could drop by and view my work and that of my fellow artists.

Which comes first …. the vessel or the foliage ? This time it was a combination of both …I collected these majestic bulrushes last year on my way to Hornby Island  ( a wet swampy experience ) dried them and tied a bundle with twine. They looked amazing just as a bundle propped up in a corner. Then last fall I started working with a black clay and a mottle glaze which I applied very thick so it made the clay pit and bubble in the firing and I remembered the bulrushes left behind on Hornby waiting….

The rest just fell into place….. The bulrushes were so imposing it had to be a very simplistic vase, but quite tall and I tried to follow the line of the black bulbs at the tops. The oxidized copper wire, tag, and swallow are just an afterthought !

Pit- Firing is a primitive way of firing ceramic without glaze it is the relationship between form and smoke …it’s speaks to a simple, intuitive way of ceramic making that almost makes glazes seem contrived ‘when we glaze we cover our forms with glass’ and hide the pure nature of the clay.

It’s like putting the clay back into the earth and then using vegetation to fire it. After this you discover the most amazing almost archaic pots that you really have had no control over; and you can have no expectations about.

As I unearthed them I felt like I was on an archaeological dig. Even the broken ones became precious relics as I patched them with oxidized copper. !

It has really exciting these last few months experimenting with different clay and glazes and now I’m  counting the hours until tomorrow !

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the weather and made it to this years Holiday Sale. We made $60 in raffle tickets and Hughes& Co will match this. This gives us $120 for Plan Canada to add their contribution taking the total to $720 for ‘Medicine for Mums and Babies’

I have had a number of last minute requests from people yesterday ; so will fulfill any last minute sales during the next few days. Therefore, if you missed purchasing anything please do not hesitate to contact me and I can arrange a time over the next few days for pickup.

Bells have different meaning in different cultures and religions:- some of these include harmony, clarity, protection or good luck.

These small ceramic bells are available at the Holiday Sale and can be associated with any of the above meanings, or more simply just to ring in the Holiday Season!

One of my passions these past few months has been working with new clay and forming these primitive small bowls and plates. They are different, full of character and very, very unique.

Hope some of them find a good home this Holiday Season!
